Vinous 91 - The 2024 Finca Resalso is 100% Tempranillo from Ribera del Duero. Attractive purple in color, it offers highly primary aromas of violets and fresh cherry. The palate is all about pure fruit, with fresh cherry and a touch of strawberry lightly tightened by a hint of grip. Expressive and primary.

CRU/JRM - A wine this good at this price point is remarkable.  Delicious and very moreish.  A perennial favourite for good reason.

Winemaker Notes - Finca Resalso is the name of a historical vineyard which was planted in 1932, the year in which Emilio Moro was born. Finca Resalso is also the name we have given to their wine which is made from grapes from their youngest vines. Cherry red color with a violet rim typical of its youth. In the nose it is expressive and intense where the primary aromas of Tempranillo of red berry fruit stand out and are clearly perceived. In the mouth it is balanced and well-structured, with a pleasant aftertaste.

Winemaker's Notes - The appellation of Côte de Brouilly sits on the steep slopes of the extinct volcano Mont Brouilly and is surrounded by the larger appellation of Brouilly. The soils here are volcanic with blue stones, from diorite deposits. The Stéphane Aviron Côte de Brouilly is sourced from two separate vineyards of these slopes. The first makes up about 75% of the blend and sits in the poor soils facing southwest on the hillside. Vines average 60+ years old in this parcel and these grapes account for the wine’s depth and structure. The second parcel faces due south with younger vines (45+ years) and contributes ripe juicy fruit to the final blend.

Terroir: This cuvée is from two of the best parcels in Moulin-à-Vent: Rochegres and Le Mont. Stéphane Aviron considers this to be one of the best terroirs of Beaujolais. The soils here are white granite with iron and manganese deposits. The vines in the parcels are all old, averaging 65 years old and many over 100 years in age.

Vinification: Grapes are vinified separately until time for the final blending and bottling. Whole bunches are used and then macerated in temperature controlled stainless steel vats for ten days. The wine is aged in neutral Burgundian barriques, 228-liter barrels, that are between three and six years old for 12 to 14 months.

Decanter 92 - Darkly coloured and darkly flavoured too, with blackberry, blackcurrant and firm, dry tannins. A fairly robust, structured style that’s quite strict. Good length and sense of freshness. Grown on stony soils.

The nose reveals a superb opulent and complex aromatic bouquet with notes of blackberries and blueberries harmoniously combined with floral notes of roses and lilacs, before revealing aromas of dark tobacco and fresh figs. Powerful and elegant at the same time, the palate offers a beautiful silky structure highlighted by notes of very ripe fruit such as blackcurrants and figs and spicy aromas of cinnamon and cardamom. The finish is long and particularly flavoursome with a hint of mint.

Maker's Notes - We really like the terroir of Vinsobres, a beautiful village located near Vaison la Romaine; The vineyard is at an altitude of 300m and is situated for the most part on terraces. Vinsobres is particularly suitable for Syrah because it preserves the finesse which is often lost in more southern climates. It develops notes of violet, smoked meat and blackberries. Grenache is also suited to this terroir, full bodied and not heavy, with notes of black chocolate, cherry and typical Garrigue aromas.

Maker's Notes - Rocca's Moscato d'Asti comes from 2.5-hectares of 30-year-old vines in the commune of San Rocco Seno d'Elvio in Barbaresco. More specifically, the vines sit in the Montersino Cru in the southern and highest part of the appellation at 350 metres above sea level--so not a typical source. The mature vines and limestone-rich soil here combine to give a wine of tremendous energy and freshness with lovely chamomile, citrus and stone fruit aromatics.

Decanter 91- With brightness and shine this white is very lemon/lime plus peach, with a juicy mid palate. Lees stirring lends richness that also makes it savoury. Perhaps a touch abrupt on the finish, but plenty of mid palate panache.

Other Comments - The finish is long and distinguishes itself by nice and light woody and citrus fruit aromas. In the mouth, the wine is fully developed and complex, with a nice volume as well as a light acidity for the freshness. Its nose is fine and complex - even lemony with its pomelo scent - with some smoky notes. Chateau Crabitey Graves Blanc displays a fine, light yellow color and a nice brilliance.

Then again, we are in Castelnuovo Berardenga. This old-school Chianti Classico delivers the goods. It is very much a wine for the dinner table. The 2023 spent 12 months in cask.

Jeremy's Notes - This wine has a special smoothness and elegance that evokes simple luxury.  It is not bold or super-concentrated but rather palate-caressing and silky. This pairs well with most food but is an outstanding no-food sipper and we all need those.

Wine Advocate 90 - Medium to deep garnet-purple in color, the 2018 Fleur la Mothe offers up pronounced notions of cassis, blackberry pie and Black Forest cake with hints of pencil shavings, black olives and lavender. Vinous 90 - I was pleased to see that the aromatics on the 2018 Fleur La Mothe have gained more refinement and focus since I tasted it from barrel, offering blackberry and briar, touches of blue fruit and sous-bois scents emerging with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannins, fine weight and focus and just the right amount of grip on the structured finish. Allow 3–4 years in bottle, because this Cru Bourgeois can age seriously well.

WA 93+ - The Fèlsina 2019 Chardonnay I Sistri Collezione Privata is a wine of medium-rich texture with plenty of orchard fruit, preserved lemon, apricot, saffron spice and a pinch of cumin or cinnamon. The wine shows a creamy texture with long, soft fruit flavors that should carry this wine forward over the 10-year mark.

Wine Advocate 92 - A blend of unknown proportions of Grenache Noir, Mourvèdre and Syrah, the 2022 Gigondas Les Jocasses offers up aromas of iris, peony, cherries, flowers, garrigue and pepper mingled with a delicately reduced touch. Medium to full-bodied, enrobing and charming, it's dense and structured with a lovely freshness and a long, sappy and dark wild berries-inflected finish. It matured in concrete tanks for eight months.

Vinous 91 - The 2022 Gigondas Jocasses oers intense spice box, black cherry and strawberry aromas, complemented by

underpinnings of garrigue. Clocking in at 14.5% alcohol, this is a medium-bodied 2022 red that’s concentrated and juicy.

Although bottle-aging will bring out more layers, this fabulous Gigondas can already be enjoyed from a young age.

WS 91 - Intense and complex, this combines cherry and berry fruit with earth, iron, leather and spice flavors, finishing with sour cherry, leather and tobacco notes. Drink now through 2022.

WA 90+ - Piancornello does a great job with its lower-end Rosso. Indeed, the 2016 Rosso di Montalcino makes a great impression in the glass, thanks to its beautifully dark ruby color. The bouquet offers black cherry, spice, tar and licorice. The mouthfeel is simple and crisp. It makes the perfect pairing partner to wood-fired pizza with extra mozzarella cheese melted on top.

CRU/JRM  Once again and not surprisingly, very hard to tell this from a full-blown Brunello.  A magnificent effort and a steal of a bargain.  The yields are less but the quality is stunning. Claudio Monaci is the little master of Montalcino.  Delectably complex and long.  Bravo.

Maker's Notes - Grown on the very sandy soil of sedimentary safres which make up a small part of the appellation, this Grenache shows immense suppleness, aromatic expression and balance. A wine of great distinction and finesse.  Beautiful deep ruby-red colour. This wine reveals a powerful and complex nose with notes of tobacco, cigars and leather. Perfectly balanced with soft and silky tannins, the palate reveals an aromatic bouquet marked by “garrigue” with aromas of rosemary, undergrowth and spices.

Vinous 91 The 2015 Barbera d'Alba Gepin is terrific. Dark, rich and voluptuous, but with plenty of structure, the 2015 expresses all of the natural intensity of the year while retaining a very appealing sense of translucency. Succulent dark cherry, plum, spice, leather, mint and dried herbs add to the wine's forward, racy personality.

CRU/JRM  Aged one year in large oak casks.  Good depth on the nose - cherries and stone - quite expansive and plush on the palate with dense fruitiness and some minerality.  Excellent balance and fair density with good length.

Vinous 92 - The 2019 Calados del Puntido is 100% Tempranillo sourced from a vineyard planted in 1976 in Páganos, Rioja Alavesa. Aged for 16 months in French oak barrels, this wine offers notes of herbs, balsamic and ripe black/red fruit, complemented by iodine and hints of blood. Dry, compact and fairly reactive due to its tannins, this juicy wine lingers on the fruit notes.

Wine Spectator 91 - Hints of violet, clove, anise and graphite are a delicate, aromatic thread woven through cherry compote, plum skin, dried thyme and mineral flavors. This is supple and harmonious, with fine tannins firming the finish. Drink now through 2029.

Wine Advocate 89 - The third vintage of the new organic Tempranillo produced without added sulfur is the 2018 La Felisa. It reached 13.5% alcohol and kept healthy acidity parameters in a cooler year than 2017. The wine was produced with grapes from vines aged 15 to 25 years old, fermented with 18 days maceration and matured for seven to 10 months in oak barrels. It has a tender nose with floral notes, somehow delicate and expressive, coming through as fully developed, perhaps a little fragile, aromatic and very open. It feels like it's developing quite quickly, even if it has quite a lot of tannin. I'd opt for drinking this sooner rather than later.

Maker's Notes - Very deep, intense cherry red in colour. It is expressive and elegant on the nose with an outstanding aromatic intensity based on the Tempranillo variety,

the spices and the torrefacto notes from its passage through French oak, bringing richness, volume and complexity to the whole. It is broad and meaty in the mouth with polished tannins and a long and persistent aftertaste.

Vinous 89 - The 2023 Côtes du Rhône Blanc Coudoulet de Beaucastel presents vivid lemon flesh, honeysuckle, yellow apple, herbal nuances and a slice of pear on the enticing aromatic profile. Medium-bodied at most, this refreshing white bundles plentiful elegance and closes with a bright finish of acceptable length.

CRU/JRM - Don't get fooled by the Cotes du Rhone denomination.  This is white Chateauneuf-du-Pape.  Famille Perrin/Chateau de Beaucastel are one of the most respected and revered winemaker families in the world.  This wine is on allocation for good reason and represents stunning value for money.  First come, first served. I keep the last case of this for myself.

Wine Advocate 92 - Bottled just a week before my visit, the 2018 Saint-Péray Lieu-dit Hongrie was already showing off its stuff, bursting with notes of grilled pineapple and citrus. It's medium to full-bodied but crisp and firmly built, with a silky feel on the palate and a lingering, nicely focused finish.

Wine Spectator 92 - Expressive, with welcoming black cherry and plum pâte de fruit aromas and flavors, gilded with violet and anise notes. Reveals a graphite edge on the finish. Tasty.

Wine Advocate 89-91 - The medium to full-bodied 2020 Crozes Hermitage Domaine des Grands Chemins features gently floral aromas and a backdrop of cherry fruit. It's silky and fine, with a hint of mocha on the lingering finish.

Wine Spectator 92 - Features melted red licorice, fresh currant, spiced fruit cake and raspberry tart flavors that are inviting and supple yet quickly firm up on the palate, thanks to fine-grained tannins and red tea-laced acidity. Reveals good tension and persistence. Grenache and Syrah.

Wine Advocate 91+ - Delas's 2019 Chateauneuf du Pape Haute Pierre is a blend of Grenache and Syrah vinified in concrete and aged in foudre. Remarkably, I still detected hints of cedar on the nose, joined by notes of leather, clove and raspberries. It's full-bodied and reasonably supple, except for some woody tannins. While it came across as a bit disjointed, in a few years this should come together nicely.

CRU/JRM - Tuscan Pinot Noir is by no means a common item but Felsina have a masterful hand at vineyards and wine making. The Nero di Nubi is not released young, the current vintage is going on seven years in the cellar.  It will not fool you into thinking this is a classic Burgundy but it is miles better than all the tutti-frutti pinot noirs from the wannabe new world sites.  This is an elegant, smooth and complex pinot noir produced in miniscule quantities and well worth the price.

Wine Advocate 92 - The 2022 Chateauneuf du Pape la Bernardine, a blend of Grenache Noir, Mourvèdre and Syrah in unknown proportions, offers up aromas of cardamom, garrigue, spices and pepper. Medium to full-bodied, concentrated and generously extracted, with plenty of youthfully chewy tannins, it's framed by a muscular, rather dense palate with a firm, slightly dry finish.

Jeremy's Notes - We have imported La Bernardine every year and it never fails to sell out.  That's because it's wonderfully well made, scrumptious, luxurious and elegant.  Complex, smooth and long.  It will also age well if you decide to lay it down.

Wine Advocate 95 - The 2012 Viña Tondonia Reserva comes from a very dry year, with 25% less rain than the average (at the time), resulting in lower yields of very healthy grapes that delivered wines with nice balance between alcohol and polyphenols, making it very apt for the aging in barrel. It had a slightly longer élevage in barrel, six years. The wine is aromatic with a developed profile, spicy and tertiary (forest floor, a touch of brick dust and iodine), complex and nuanced. The palate is full and round, with polished tannins and a long, dry finish. It has a textbook Tondonia nose and profile.

Vinous 95 - The 2012 Viña Tondonia is a blend of Tempranillo, Garnacha, Mazuelo and Graciano, cultivated on the meander of the Ebro River in Rioja Alta. This garnet wine reveals aromas of ash and plum

marmalade, with a faintly herbal core and hints of oaky cedar. Dry and lean, the fairly chalky texture lingers long, concluding with a compact, flavorful and lasting finish. The 2012 is a beautiful old school Rioja.

Wine Spectator 94 - This lets a core of warm plum sauce, dark loganberry and singed anise flavors ooze out, while violet, white pepper, bay leaf and dark olive notes provide the frame. A mouthwatering mineral edge weaves throughout. Best from 2020 through 2035.

Vinous - 93: Dark purple. Dark berry preserve, licorice, incense, olive and exotic spice scents are accompanied by a building woodsmoke note. Sappy and broad on the palate, offering spice-tinged bitter cherry, blueberry and violet pastille flavors supported by juicy acidity. The floral note carries through a very long, dark-fruit-driven finish, and gently chewy tannins add shape and grip.

Robert Parker 91 -  The 2016 Cornas Chante Perdrix starts off a little tarry, but it quickly shapes up in the glass to reveal grilled meat and red plum aromas. It's medium to full-bodied, with an open-knit texture and a long, peppery and crisp finish. It should drink well for a decade or so.
