France: Domaine de Bellene

Nicolas Potel produces some of the most sought-after wines in the Burgundy region. Nicolas learned the art of winemaking on his family’s estate in Volnay. In 2005, he established his own winery, Domaine de Bellene, and in 2008, he launched Maison Roche de Bellene, his negociant business. Nicolas blends traditional and modern techniques by using grapes from old vines and biodynamic and organic farming methods.

During the harvest, the grapes are all picked by hand, in small batches.

Freshly harvested red grapes are poured onto the sorting table, and only 40% are de-stemmed before fermentation.

Careful sorting and selection ensure only mature, ripe grapes are used.

The winery is located near the old city of Beaune, which used to be called "Bellene" many years ago, thus inspiring the winery's name.

Domaine de Bellene combines old architecture with modern, environmentally-friendly upgrades.

We were fortunate enough to have lunch with the grape harvesters who came from all over the world.

The winery's vinification methods are simple: no yeast, sugar, or enzymes are added.
